NDA (National Defence Academy) Entry – Complete Guide

Short Information

The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the premier institute for training future officers of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. The NDA entrance exam is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Selected candidates undergo three years of training at NDA (Khadakwasla, Pune), followed by specialized training at their respective academies (IMA, AFA, INA).

Educational Qualification

  • For Army Wing: 10+2 (any stream)
  • For Navy & Air Force Wings: 10+2 with Physics & Mathematics
  • Candidates appearing in Class 12 can also apply.


Selection Process & SSB Interview

1. NDA Written Exam

  • Conducted by UPSC
  • Subjects: Mathematics (300 marks) + GAT (600 marks)
  • Negative marking applicable
  • Candidates scoring above the cutoff qualify for SSB Interview

2. SSB Interview (5 Days)

Candidates who clear the written exam are called for SSB (Services Selection Board) Interview, which includes:

Day 1: Screening Test

  • OIR Test (Officer Intelligence Rating) – Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • PPDT (Picture Perception and Description Test) – Candidates narrate and discuss a story

Day 2: Psychological Tests

  • TAT (Thematic Apperception Test) – Story writing on pictures
  • WAT (Word Association Test) – Quick response writing
  • SRT (Situation Reaction Test) – Response to given situations
  • Self-Description Test

Day 3 & 4: Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks

  • Group Discussion (GD)
  • Progressive Group Task (PGT)
  • Command Task
  • Individual Obstacles
  • Group Planning Exercise

Day 5: Conference

  • Candidates interact with the SSB Board
  • Final selection decision is made

3. Medical Examination

Candidates recommended by SSB must pass the medical test, where their physical and mental fitness is assessed.

  • If found unfit, candidates can appeal for a re-medical within a given time.

4. Final Merit List & Joining NDA

  • UPSC prepares a final merit list based on written exam + SSB marks
  • Selected candidates receive joining instructions for NDA, Khadakwasla (Pune)

  • Chemistry: Elements, Acids, Bases, Organic Chemistry

  • Geography: Climate, Resources, Indian Geography
  • Current Affairs: National & International Events

Marking Scheme:

  • Mathematics: +2.5 for correct, -0.83 for wrong.
  • GAT: +4 for correct, -1.33 for wrong.

To apply for NDA, candidates must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years at the time of joining.



Medical Criteria for NDA

General Medical Standards

  • Height (Minimum Required):

    • Army: 157 cm
    • Navy: 157 cm
    • Air Force: 162.5 cm
    • Relaxation for Gorkhas, North Eastern candidates, and Ladakh region
  • Weight: Should be proportionate to height and age

  • Eyesight:

    • Army: 6/6 in one eye, 6/9 in the other (Correctable with glasses up to ±2.5D)
    • Navy & Air Force: No color blindness, no night blindness
  • Hearing:

    • No severe ear infections
    • Must be able to hear a whisper from 610 cm
  • Chest Expansion:

    • Minimum 5 cm expansion required
  • Dental Health:

    • Must have a good set of 28-32 teeth
    • No severe cavities or gum disease
  • Past Medical History Considerations:

    • No history of asthma, epilepsy, severe fractures, or mental illness
  • Knock Knees & Flat Feet:

    • Not allowed as they affect running ability
  • Surgical History:

    • No major surgeries in the last 12 months

  • Indian Air Force - 

1. Height and Weight:

  • Minimum Height:

    • Flying Branch: 162.5 cm
    • Ground Duty Branches: 157.5 cm
    • Note: Height relaxations are provided for candidates from certain regions, such as Gorkhas and individuals from the North-Eastern states.
  • Weight: Should be proportionate to height and age as per standard charts.

2. Vision Standards:

  • Flying Branch:

    • Distance Vision: 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other.
    • Near Vision: N5 each eye.
    • Color Vision: CP-I.
    • Myopia: Nil.
    • Hypermetropia: +2.0 D Sph.
    • Astigmatism: +0.75 D Cyl.
    • LASIK: Not permitted.
  • Ground Duty (Technical/Non-Technical) Branches:

    • Distance Vision: 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other.
    • Near Vision: N5 each eye.
    • Color Vision: CP-II.
    • Myopia: -3.5 D Sph.

  • Indian Army -

1. Height and Weight:

  • Minimum Height:

    • Male: 157.5 cm
    • Female: 152 cm
    • Note: Height relaxations are provided for candidates from certain regions, such as Gorkhas and individuals from the North-Eastern states.
  • Weight: Should be proportionate to height and age as per standard charts.

2. Chest Measurements:

  • Male Candidates:
    • Minimum Chest Expansion: 5 cm

3. Vision Standards:

  • Uncorrected Vision: 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other.
  • Corrected Vision: 6/6 in both eyes with glasses.
  • Color Vision: CP-III (Defective Safe).

4. Hearing:

  • Candidates should be able to hear a forced whisper at a distance of 610 cm in a quiet room.

5. Dental Health:

  • A minimum of 14 dental points is required.
  • Candidates should have healthy gums and a sufficient number of natural and sound teeth for efficient mastication.

6. General Health:

  • Candidates must be free from any disease or disability that can interfere with the efficient performance of military duties.
  • There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects, or underweight.
  • The candidate should not have a past history of mental breakdown or fits.
  • No signs of functional or organic disease of the heart and blood vessels.
  • Blood pressure should be normal.
  • No evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis or previous history of the disease.
  • Candidates should not have any disease of the digestive system, skin diseases, or any other disease that can be aggravated by service conditions.
OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION
  • Indian Navy - 

1. Height and Weight:

  • Minimum Height:

    • Male: 157 cm
    • Female: 152 cm
    • Note: Height relaxations are provided for candidates from certain regions, such as Gorkhas, North-Eastern states, and individuals from hilly areas.
  • Weight: Should be proportionate to height and age as per standard charts.

2. Vision Standards:

  • Uncorrected Vision: 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other.
  • Corrected Vision: 6/6 in both eyes with glasses.
  • Color Vision: CP-II.

3. Hearing:

  • Candidates should not have any disease of the ear, nose, or throat, and should have normal hearing.

4. Dental Health:

  • A minimum of 14 dental points is required.
  • Candidates should have healthy gums and a sufficient number of natural and sound teeth for efficient mastication.

5. General Health:

  • Candidates must be in good physical and mental health, free from any disease/disability that can interfere with the efficient performance of duties both ashore and afloat under peace as well as war conditions in any part of the world.
  • There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects, or underweight.
  • The candidate should not have a past history of mental breakdown or fits.

  • Blood pressure should be normal.
  • No evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis or previous history of the disease.
